“Stitch an Envelope Book”

Demonstration and guided activity by penkitten Anne Elser. Stitch your family of envelope samples together just like a book! For the bookbinder looking to add a new feature to their hand bound books or calligrapher looking for a creative way to package your envelope styles, this guided activity is useful and fun as a self-promotional tool or a gift for yourself or a friend. We’ll be using a combination of Coptic and Tape bookbinding techniques and you’ll have a handout waiting for you when you arrive.

Keep in mind that the envelopes you use for the activity can be blank if you like. But it might be more exciting for you if you’ve got imagery/calligraphy on both the front and back of your envelopes. We’ll be using the flaps themselves as signatures to bind the book. The ribbon really does need to be 1.5 inches wide and your envelopes really do need to be 6.5 x 4.75 because we’ll all be using the same template to stitch our books. Binders DOES carry ribbon and envelopes in lots of fantastic colors, if you don’t have time to pick them up before you arrive. I will also be bringing a few chunks of beeswax so you can way your thread. But if you don’t have any, no sweat. But bring it if you’ve got it!

You’ll walk out the door with a completed project that has many variations and practical uses!

August 3, 2012 Meeting Time Changed: Passion for Calligraphy Lecture and Demo by Barbara Calzolari

Hello inky friends,

We have moved the start time of our next Penabler meeting to 7PM to better serve Barbara’s schedule. The night of our Penabler meeting follows Barbara’s first full day of her Nib to Brush workshop, which ends at 6:30PM.

Barbara and her students will take a break at 6:30 so that we’ll be ready for the Penabler slideshow, interview and short demo at 7:00. We’ll set up a table in the workspace for Penablers to lay their snacks and drinks. After getting comfortable, we’ll all sit for Barbara’s slide show and an enchanting interview Q&A session where we’ll get a delightful view of who Barbara is and what makes her tick. We’ll get to see the person behind the amazing work she produces. We hope to make this inaugural interview a well-anticipated and valued Penabler tradition for years to come. Think of it as an Inside the Actor’s Studio episode where the craft is visual art/artists instead of actors and the stage. Among other personalized questions and topics, we will include the Pivot Questionnaire used on the show. I can’t wait!!!

That evening, our room will still be set up for the workshop, so we’ll get creative with the space to allow for Penabler access, without disturbing the workshop tables. Get ready to settle in for some yummy treats and fascinating conversation with Barbara.

See you at 7:00 PM!

~Anne

July 7.6.12 Meeting Notes: Filigree Flourishing with Finetec by Victoria Lansford

Our first meeting was a BLAST! We all enjoyed Victoria Lansford’s demo on flourishing and everyone got to dive in on a good hour’s worth of experimentation afterwards.

Here are some great pictures of our group, Victoria’s presentation, and some of the great work produced that night.

Our table of treats was deliciously varied and people were really generous with their materials and knowledge. We had a wonderful range of skill levels and I was really happy to see so many beginners dive right into the process.

I was particularly moved when I realized I was sharing a room with so many important figures that have helped shaped my career (whether they know it or not!) my first calligraphy teacher Carol Gray, one of my first design teachers at Portfolio Center Julia Mahood, and her son Noah Macey who happens to be my youngest calligraphy student to date. Lots of talent and love in that room and let me tell you – the first Penabler meeting couldn’t have been more perfect.

This time next month, our Second Penabler meeting will be on Friday, August 3rd, 2012 from 6-8:30PM. Italian calligrapher Barbara Calzolari will give a lecture and demonstration called “Passion for Calligraphy.” She’s in town that weekend giving the much anticipated 3-day workshop From Nib to Brush.
