The Enchanted Letter workshop with Heather Held

Hello, fellow inkers!

August 6th is the last day you’ll be able to register for Heather Held’s Enchanted Letter workshop on Sep 6th & 7th. This course is appropriate for ALL LEVELS, so yep- you’re invited! Heather was the first instructor to teach me to flourish. All those little leaves and feathers and flowers you’ve seen me do, come from her. Heather takes what looks like a complicated endeavor, and breaks it down into logical and easy steps. She does it softly, with grace, candor, wisdom, and encouragement.

Scroll down to the very bottom to see recent work Heather will be deconstructing for us during the class. Yummy, no?! Come sit next to me and we’ll make these things together!

A note from Heather about the class:
“This is one of my favourite courses to teach. We explore The Embedded Script Letterform, Foliate Letters and Florentine Foliate Extensions among other things!”

2 Sessions | All Levels | Price: $175 | Max.16

Description
This workshop is an exploration in designing and decorating a contemporary illuminated letter. The letters are based on a rounded script alphabet and transformed into meandering ribbons or graceful leaves. The student will be guided through the pencil design stage of their own unique letter as well as the decorative foliate extension. The design can be embellished with a simple 23K gilding technique or gold gouache. Pointed pen flourishes are added to the design, which is further embellished with color. The final design is evocative of the graceful capital letters found in Victorian illustrated books. Knowledge of the pointed pen as well as any rounded script alphabet is very helpful in this class although an exemplar will be provided.

Living Letters: Calligraphic Body Painting Meeting Friday April 4, 2014

Hello Penablers!

Now that Spring is officially here, it’s time to stretch our wings just as mother nature prompts us. Let’s broaden our ideas about where lettering can live and thrive. Tonight we’ll use the most living and loving surface available – each other.

Binders has, for some time now, transformed it’s opening corner of the floor into a showcase of body painting supplies: tools, paints, mediums, and prosthetics. I’ve walked past that front entrance for long enough to finally ask what the big deal was all about. If you can draw a beautiful letter, you can do it with a brush, and you can do it on a body. Professional Body Painter, Antonio Tiggs, will be answering the technical questions we may have about how to use the materials, and after his demo, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a body painting exercise where we’ll be lettering on each other. So, wear a short sleeved shirt, sundress, tank top, or shorts, so we’ll have all the room we need to experiment and have fun.

What: LIVING LETTERS: Calligraphic Body Painting

When: Friday, April 4, 2014 from 6-8PM

Where: Binders Art School – 3330 Piedmont Rd Buckhead

What to bring:

Watercolor brushes: Round for pointed pen/copperplate hands and/or flat, bright for broad edge hands.

Water container

Paper Towels

Small can of hairspray (this prevents the paint from smudging)

A snack or drink to share

Your body

See you soon!

The Wonderful World of Peter Thornton

January 13, 2014

PeterThorntonAP: What is your favorite word?

PT: Translucent.

AP: What is you least favorite word?

PT: Audit! I have been self employed for almost 40 years and have always needed an accountant!

AP:  Describe your earliest memory of feeling your first creative spark.

PT: Looking at Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss and seeing her left hand behind his head. Made me realise that I had ‘feelings’ and a little depth perhaps (more than creative I guess.)

AP: What turns you on?

PT: Enthusiasm and a smiling face.

AP:  What turns you off?

PT: Bigotry and guns. There are more but I don’t wish to appear on a moralistic pedestal.

AP:  If you could use just one word to describe your work, what would it be?

PT: ‘Lively’ but someone I respect once said it was ‘exquisite’ and I found that quite moving.

AP: How has your experience as an author influenced your calligraphic work?

PT: It made me think from more angles.

AP: What do you love most about teaching?

PT: It makes me feel useful……an unfamiliar feeling for me really

AP: What sound or noise do you love?

PT: My wife coming home. Children laughing and playing when you cannot see them.

AP: What advice do you have to creatives about what to do when they get “stuck?”

PT: Henry Ford’s remark, ‘The harder I work, the luckier I become’ seems to sum up this problem.

AP: What music (genre and/or composer) inspires you most?

PT: Vaughan Williams‘Lark Ascending’. Louis Armstrong’s ‘It’s a Wonderful World‘ and anything by Beethoven

AP: What fine art (genre and/or artist) inspires you most?

PT: Rembrandt and ‘Drawings’

AP:  What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

PT: An orchestral Conductor.

AP: What profession would you not like to do?

PT: Accountant

AP: What do you admire most about Adolf Bernd?

PT: His quiet subtlety

AP: How have your roots as an Englishman affected your life here in the States?

PT: I do make a better cup of tea than most Diners I think? 🙂

AP: If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

PT: ‘Well, you finally made it! Many of us in here had some doubts that you would’! 🙂

Decorated Versal Letters with Peter Thornton
2 Sessions | All Levels | Price: $175 | Sat & Sun: Feb 8 & 9, 10am – 5pm
The desire to decorate lies within us all and for over 1500 years the letter has served us well. Beginning as a signpost to the reader it quickly became an object of beauty as an end in itself.
Using the wonderful letters of Adolf Bernd (1909 – 1994) for inspiration, and as a starting point, we shall examine 3 areas of his (and our) major interests: a) the backgrounds; b) the letterforms; and c) the color harmonies.
image005In this workshop, for ALL levels of ability (see student example to the left), we shall begin with simple exercises in color unity and contrasts in shapes, patterns and themes of Adolf Bernd’s (and ours) choices which will lead to the decoration of both historic and/or contemporary letters.
During the workshop there will be demonstrations and examples related to water color techniques and AB’s work. A feature of the class will be to take/use colors from nature and transfer these onto our backgrounds and letters.
See you there!

December 6th, 2013 Penabler Meeting: Holiday Garland

Dear Penablers!
Our next meeting will be Friday, December 6th from 6-8Pm. We’ll be making a miniature version of a holiday garland you can make with supplies you’ve already got at home. This garland’s message made with capital letterforms of any hand, can be made at any scale. Both small and large can store flat and be mailed easily. I’ve mailed larger ones in a FedEx envelope to out of town relatives. A small one is wonderful, too, and great for tighter spaces. Your garland can also be two-sided, displaying holiday cheer in two languages, uniting two families, countries, or celebrating the arrival of twins…
What will yours say? Here are some suggestions:
• Bah, Humbug • Noel • Merry Christmas • Whatever • Peace • Happy Holidays • Happy New Year
Come on the 6th with holiday cheer (or not!), a snack or drink to share, and the supplies listed below.
SUPPLIES:
• Colored paper in a palette you enjoy.
• Calligraphic tools and ink
• adhesives (glue, tape, stapler)
• scissors/xacto knife
• String, thin ribbon, or twine
Optional items:
• hole punch
• greenery (real or plastic) I’ve got some to share.

See you soon!

Peter Thornton Calligraphy Workshop: February 8-9, 2014

PeterThornton

Dear Penablers,

Exciting news here – calligrapher Peter Thornton is coming to Atlanta for a weekend workshop February 8, & 9th, 2014. He’ll be leading us through “Decorated Versal Letters” and we’re so excited. More information coming soon about this new and exciting workshop.

Meantime, we’re looking for someone to host him while he’s here (FEB 7TH, 8TH,  & 9TH) so he’s well-rested and comfortable. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Jacob Gunter (jacob@bindersart.com) at Binders.

And many thanks to our volunteers at last weekend’s Penabler demo table for Artfolio 2013. A good time was had by all and I loved sitting next to each of you. Check out the fun pictures we took of our amazing and generous hands fast at work.

Much love to all,

2013 Artfolio Penabler Demo Table Volunteers Needed

artfolio2012penablersHello Penablers,

Remember the fun we had last year at the Penabler Demo table during Artfolio? Well, it’s time to do it again next weekend: November 2nd-3rd, 2013.

This year we have an official product sponsor: Dr. Ph. Martin’s liquid acrylic inks. YUMMY. Along with the tools and inks you love to use, you’ll have access to their solids and iridescent inks, which are quite versatile. I’ve used them for years and am thrilled they’ve reached out to sponsor our table this year.

Read below for more details. Even if you can’t demo – drop by that weekend to visit and feast your eyes on all the fun around you. Binders sure knows how to throw an art party. 🙂

~Anne

=============================================

There will be no official Atlanta Penabler meeting the first Friday the 1st of November. Instead, we’ll be participating in Artfolio on Saturday and Sunday, Novermber 2nd & 3rd. Read more below about what the party’s all about and how you can participate!

Binders has an event each year called Artfolio: a weekend of demonstrations and lectures. Many new art supplies, products, and tools are featured by artists and company reps from all over the country. It’s an art supply bizarre and a very fun one at that! Lot’s of promotions, coupons and special offers are available. Teachers come by looking for new techniques and materials, students come looking for inspiration. It’s a BLAST.

I’ve had a calligraphy table before and demoing quietly for the crowd has always been fun. This year, I want to transform the calligraphy table into The Atlanta Penablers Table. This means if you are a Penabler at ANY level of experience, you are encouraged to participate in this fabulous weekend and claim a seat at the table.

I’m sectioning the weekend (Saturday, Nov. 2nd: 9am-7pm & Sunday, Nov. 3rd: 11am-6pm) into just seven time slots (each slot is 2 hours). Simply pick the slot(s) you’d like to fill, bring your stuff and come on over. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP!

While you’re sitting, you can expect people to walk by and marvel at the amazing tools you’re using. They might ask you questions, make comments or simply sit quietly and watch. I find this whole experience gratifying, in that it gives me time to sit and focus on the pen and letter and to share the experience with others.

If you are a young calligrapher and find the idea intimidating, please don’t let that stop you. Would you rather sit next to me and use this as a time to brush up on skills? Want help with your caps? Trouble angling your pen? Your free 2-hour lesson is waiting for you.

If you are an experienced calligrapher and you’d really like to show me YOUR way with the pen, then come give ME the lesson! Or maybe you’d just relish the time to sit and do nothing but flourish, without the distractions of your home setting or business looming by.

I want people to walk by the table and go, “Wow. That’s so beautiful. These two people are sharing something and it’s fun. They’re working on their craft, sharing information, and are having a good time doing it. I’d like to try it.”

The overall message is community, of which you are a part.

Come sit with me! AND, ONE MORE TIME: CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP!

~Anne

PS: If we run out of slots, not to worry! Artfolio is open to the public and we’d love to see you at the table to say hi and to visit the store and see all the other fabulous products on display. Come join the party!
